Dmitry Medvedev Specially Mentioned Sakhalin Fish Industry Potential

The Russia’s Prime Minister highlighted the need to provide additional support for investment projects on Sakhalin and Kuriles.

As I've recently learned, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting devoted to the Social-economic development of Kuril Islands federal program implementation. According to the Russian Government press service, the focus in its realization should be given to utilization of the competitive advantages of the territory. Dmitry Medvedev said that projects for marine resources extraction and unique biotechnical capacities creation are currently being implemented; a program has been developed to support small investment projects. Besides, there’re plans to set up technical institute and to use alternative energy sources at larger scales. But it’s still necessary to provide additional support for investment projects, and, respectively, to improve the legal framework and mechanisms to develop public-private partnership.
Today Sakhalin region produces nearly 25 per cent of total fish and fish products supply in Russia, and about 30 percent of canned fish is produced in the Far East District. 38 hatcheries on the territory provide 85% of Russia's salmon reproduction, releasing into the sea waters about 800 million of fry annually. In the near future 20 new enterprises will be built, nine of them on the Kuril Islands.
According to the head of the region, Alexander Khoroshavin, among other important matters are introduction of an international quality control system and promotion a single regional brand for fish and fish products. He added that it is possible to double the production of bio-resources, and increase both the volume and depth of their processing.
To my mind, all those measures will help to decrease Russian fish industry dependence on seasonal fluctuations in volume of salmon available for catching. There’s a huge potential for mariculture, and I’m glad to know what activities of the Sakhalin Region Government are aimed at forming a closed technological cycle from fish reproduction to its processing.
